FOSTER CARE IS A CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUE

This past month, RightWay marched with CASA of Los Angeles in the annual Kingdom Day Parade to raise awareness about the continuing inequity in foster care.

Children are removed from the home in South LA in higher numbers than any other area of LA County. In Los Angeles County, Black youth comprise 40% of the child welfare system but only 8% of the total County population. Families in poverty and families experiencing housing insecurity are disproportionately affected by the child welfare system. When Black children enter the foster care system, they remain 50% longer than other children, and they are more likely to be moved from group home to group home and from school to school.

We must ensure that all foster youth have access to a good education, the chance to enroll in extracurriculars, and the opportunity to make transformative connections with teachers, coaches, and mentors.

We must ensure that loving parents are given the support they need to prevent losing their children to the system.
